OpenGL-based library for doing yucky Mac-style animated graphical time-wasting. This might provide a more portable backend for Carl's process network visualisation demo...
A schematic capture tool -- but, actually, more of a generic component-based drawing program. This might make a good replacement for xfig for doing process diagrams. Need to play more.

Looks like a credible (and free-software) replacement for POVRay, although the input language isn't as good.

A free "subdivision modeller": it lets you build interesting 3D forms by manipulating existing objects. The tutorials are really impressive.

Free software that identifies the location of arbitrary photographs of starfields. They're running it automatically against Flickr photos now. This is really very neat -- and there's some Real CS underneath it too.
Auto-accompaniment tool for Linux audio. Worth fiddling with.
