Ordnance Survey large scale Scottish town plans, 1847-1895 - National Library of Scotland edit / delete

High-res scans of the old town plans. I live on Thorter Row, which was built about ten years ago; from looking at the maps of Dundee here, I learned that there used to be a Thorter Row in the city centre about a hundred years before that...

ScotlandsPlaces edit / delete

Handy location-based search engine for collections of historical photos, etc. (The question I was trying to answer was "what did Dundee City Square look like before it was flattened early in the last century", which is the sort of thing this appears to be good for.)

Aye Can - Scots language - Scottish Census 2011 edit / delete

Training for the census questions -- but the useful thing is the big collection of recordings of Scots speakers from different areas. (The collection is much bigger than the links suggest; try changing the number in the URL!)

National Burns Collection edit / delete

Burns' poetry and songs. This has individual songs scanned from various books, which is quite useful if you don't feel like hunting through the scans on archive.org or Google Books. On the downside, it only includes Burns' versions of the songs -- which (and it's probably safe to admit this now Burns Night has passed) aren't always an improvement on the originals; compare "This Ae Night" with the reconstructed "Cold Haily Windy Night"...

Scans of 19th-century Scottish music books. Want the original "Both Sides the Tweed"? It's here, along with seemingly every other folk song I've ever learned.

Notably especially for the field recordings of folk songs. The player uses an irritating Flash interface, but peering at the source will reveal URLs to mp4 files.

Some of which are well-known folk ballads (e.g. there's a version of "Lily of the West" here).
