Tweaking filesystem alignment to match the flash block size can make a difference (presumably on USB sticks where the flash translation layer isn't smart enough to do this itself).

Lots of disks in a custom case, using SATA port extenders. I assume they don't care too much about performance -- although this might actually work OK for UKMS, with nice wide stripes to spread the load.
